| Marteil, en 1968, a fait état de la présence, des manifestations et des problèmes posés par l'existence de la maladie des branchies dans la plupart des centres ostréicoles français. Rappelons que la découverte dans le bassin d'Arcachon des premiers sujets présentant des anomalies dans la morphologie des feuillets branchiaux remonte au mois de février 1967. Au cours des mois suivants le pourcentage de tels individus devait croître rapidement. Dès le printemps et pendant tout l'été une mortalité excessive affectait gravement les élevages arcachonnais. |

| Farming of the Japanese clam Ruditapes philippinarum took place for the first time in 1980 in the Arcachon basin. After an experimentation period of about ten years, a farming strategy, taking into consideration the distinctive features found in the bay, was able to emerge. For example, in order to fight against clam predators, crabs such as Carcinus maenas, and balistes such as Balistes capriscus, vertical protection coupled with prior ground gravelling, and laying of nets over the beds during the summer months, have become necessary. The best raising technique seems to rest on early spring planting of middle size spats (T5), after checking that no brown rings are visible. | In a previous study, we gave an account of the impact that the development of gill disease had on Portuguese-oyster farms in the Arcachon basin. The interest of these observations was being able to capture the magnitude of the phenomenon from the time it appeared and to single out the immediate consequences; they were, however, limited in time and incomplete because they affected only three-year-old subjects born on site and already, for the most part, marketable. | A peine l'ostréiculture se relevait-elle des dommages causés en 1967-1968 par ce qu'on a appelé la "maladie des branchies" qu'une deuxième épizootie décimait en 1971 les populations de C. angulata sur l'ensemble du littoral français. Cette situation rappelle celle qu'avait connue O. edulis vers 1920 dont la mortalité avait favorisé l'extension de C. angulata; cinquante ans plus tard, l'ostréiculture a du s'orienter rapidement vers une autre espèce, C. gigas. | Fed by waters from the Bay of Biscay twice a day at its south-western corner, the triangle formed by Arcachon Bay is largely dominated by oceanic influences. It has a close relationship with the continent, in particular by seasonal inputs of freshwater which can occasionally alter the marine nature of the waters in Arcachon Bay. | At high tide, Arcachon Bay covers an area of 15,500 ha. At low tide, the water surface is reduced by a third or two-thirds, according to the amplitude of the tide. Sandy beaches, sandbanks that clog channels, muddy sand islets or vast Zostera nana beds are all exposed at low tide. In this context, oyster farming occupies roughly 1,700 ha of which 300 are reserved for spat collection and 1,400 are dedicated to rearing oysters. Oyster farms are set up on the lower intertidal zone, on beaches and in Zostera beds, from 0.10 m to 1.10 m (height on the shore above chart datum). | For a few years now, a new form of farming has been developing in the Arcachon basin, which consists in replacing oyster boxes with bags made of plastic and placed at sites set up above the ground. The bags, which measure 1 metre by 0.5 metre when flat, are made of wire netting, the square or diamond-shaped links of which vary from 1 to 3 cm depending on the size of the oysters that are being farmed (figure 1). The sites are made of two parallel iron bars held at a height of 30 to 40 cm above the ground by legs driven into the sand or mud. | La coque commune Cardium edule (L.) a toujours été abondante dans le Bassin d'Arcachon. Lambert (1943) mentionne sa présence en grande quantité sur le Banc de Pineau et au Cap-Ferret; plus récemment, la carte des gisements de qouillages comestibles de la baie publiée par Labrid (1967) n'en fait état que sur le Banc de Bernet. Or, ces denières années, l'essentiel de la rcolte provient en réalité d'un seul secteur: le Banc d'Arguin. D'une installation récente et d'une étude restreinte, le gisement n'est exploité que par quelques ostréiculteurs qui mettent en profit la période de moindre activité des mois d'hivers. | The progressive reduction of the Cardium edule's (shell) areas of distribution in the Arcachon basin had led us, at the beginning of the year 1968 and after fishing season to become interested in the problem of the survival and exploitation of the only existing significant site in the most oceanic part of the bay, the Arguin bank's cove.
